The Nelson Mandela Barrio outside Cartagena, Colombia is a place of poverty, displaced people, children living on the street, and lost opportunity.
Many years ago, we were introduced to Pastors Jesus and Rosiris, an educated couple who gave up the life they could have had to live among the refugee people of Nelson Mandela. Here, they planted a church that flourishes today and includes sister churches in other locations.
Education is at the heart of Pastors Jesus and Rosiris’ ministry. They believe that in making education possible for these people who have lost so much, they restore hope, dignity and opportunity.
For many years, they’ve offered an educational and feeding program for disadvantaged children. Visionaries International has provided financial assistance for this program since 2012.
Then, they started a high school completion program for adults in the community. This program helps the men and women get back on their feet, and into a position of providing for their family. The program received authorization from the local government to grant high school certificates to graduates.
Christian elementary school opens.
Their most recent endeavor – and a dream come true for these educator/pastors – is the opening of a Christian elementary school. We are rejoicing with them on this major accomplishment, knowing it comes with big financial concerns.
With the opening of a school comes the immediate need for desks and classroom supplies, but also the ongoing need to cover teachers’ salaries, meals for students, and the list goes on.
